Before you submit to Poetry New Zealand, you are advised to read our About page to understand the how, where, when and why of PNZ. In order to understand the sort of work we are likely to accept, you are also advised to browse our archives, and to subscribe to the magazine.
Poetry NZ accepts poetry on any theme, and in any style. Make sure your poems are typed, and are appropriately edited. Also provide a brief, typed biography and a short list of the places where you have been published. Of course, what matters most is the quality of the poetry you send us, so do not bother with a long list of achievements or a resume. We do not wish to receive more than five poems in any one submission.
As for essays, we are eager to accept anything related to poetry and poetics. Once again, make sure that your work is thoroughly edited, and that the grammar and vocabulary of your essay(s) is immaculate. The essay(s) should be typed and double-spaced, and should not be more than 5000 words in length. Again, we need a brief biography and a list of publications so that if your work is selected, the process of correspondence is speeded up.
All writers published in PNZ receive a free copy of the issue in which their work appears.
In addition, a modest payment is made to the featured poet and to commissioned authors of essays and reviews. We like to think that the poets PNZ supports through the publication of their work (and/or the advice and encouragement it offers) will take up subscriptions and by this means assist in the magazine's growth, development and long term survival.
All submissions should be sent via snail-mail, and should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If the SASE is not included, do not expect a prompt response from us.
Our e-mail address is only for enquiries and comments. Any submissions made to this address will be ignored.
The postal address you should send your submissions to is:
Alistair Paterson

Good luck, and thank you for submitting to Poetry New Zealand. Please note that we usually take no more than three months to respond. Do not make any queries regarding your submission before then.
